2010 Census of Orthodox Christian Churches


Click here to read the results of the 2010 US Orthodox Christian Census conducted by Alexei Krindatch of SCOOBA (Standing Conference of Canonical Orthodox Bishops in America).

The census covers all of the Orthodox Churches in America, including both Eastern and Oriental Orthodox, and according to the census, Orthodoxy in America is growing. Statistically, there was a 16% increase in the number of parishes in America over the last 10 years.

The total amount of members within the Oriental Orthodox Churches, of which the Armenian Orthodox Church is a part, was 227,000. The following are some highlights specifically regarding the Armenian Orthodox Church, some of which are disappointing, and if accurate, should cause us to think and pray.

1) Number of parishes from 2000 to 2010:

- Armenian Church of North America (Catholicosate Etchmiadzin) - 89 to 94 (+6%)
- Armenian Apostolic Church of America (Catholicosate Cilicia) - 38 to 37 (-3%)

2) Regular and frequent church goers:

- Armenian Church of North America (Catholicosate Etchmiadzin) - 13%
  • Total adherents - 64, 500
  • Regular Church attendees - 8,300
- Armenian Apostolic Church of America (Catholicosate Cilicia) - 25%
  • Total adherents - 30,500
  • Regular Church attendees - 7,700
*Adherents are described as church members, including children, who at least participate 'occasionally' in church life.
*Regular attendees are those who attend Church on a regular basis.
